Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin Dates for Spring/Summer 2010 Collections

April 26, 2009

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin and PREMIUM announce their July 2009 dates for Spring/Summer 2010 collections.

Joint dates for Berlin Fashion Week and PREMIUM trade shows will strengthen Berlin, Germany as a Fashion Capital.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin and PREMIUM Exhibitions, with continued support by the Senate for Economics, Technology and Women’s Issues Berlin, are changing their previously announced dates as follows:

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin Spring/Summer 2010: July 1, 2009 – July 4, 2009
PREMIUM Tradeshow: July 1, 2009 – July 3, 2009

“In the interest of what is best for Berlin we have decided to change the dates of this season’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin,” said Maia Guarnaccia, Vice President IMG Fashion Europe. While the new dates present certain challenges to many of the German and Berlin based designers that show with us, we have, in consultation with our partners and designers, agreed to move our dates so that Berlin may present a unified fashion platform to the international fashion industry in
July 2009.”

“It is important as Berlin grows as an international fashion capital, that it not lose site of the very exciting designers and brands that call the city and country home,” Mr. Guarnaccia continued. “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin is the internationally recognized platform for these businesses and it is our sincere hope that future dates for the events in Berlin can be adjusted so as to better suit their needs.”

Many designers are already showing interest in doing a runway show within the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin Spring/Summer 2010. Along with the tradeshows new visitor records are being expected in the German capital and the media attention has already grown tremendously from season to season since Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin premiered in July 2007.

“For us, it was very important right from the start to find a common date with all protagonists of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – everything else does not make sense. Especially in times of recession all event organizers should coordinate themselves in favour of the industry – exhibitors and buyers – and present a strong week. The entire discussion shows that Berlin is a strong internationally relevant fashion city,” said Anita Tillmann and Norbert Tillmann, PREMIUM Exhibitions GmbH.

The fifth edition of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin will again take place at Bebelplatz in the historic centre of Berlin. Next to catwalk shows there will be a large number of other fashion events, such as the Showroom-Mile of the Berlin Senate, which is also open to the public. “By having a unified calendar of trade shows and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin the city will set the schedule of events for the industry. With all of the events together we are underlining the significance of Berlin both domestically and internationally. For Berlin, it is important to support dates that work for the entire industry and my office will lead the discussion on a common schedule for future seasons”, says Senator Harald Wolf.

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin Spring/Summer 2009 is made possible by the following sponsors: Mercedes-Benz, DHL, Maybelline Jade, Peek & Cloppenburg KG Düsseldorf and Veltins and will again be endorsed by the Senate for Economics, Technology and Women’s Issues, Berlin.

Project Runway 6th Season on Lifetime starting August 20, 2009

April 23, 2009

The battle over Project Runway has finally been resolved, with the popular reality show hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum moving to the Lifetime network. After months of being in limbo, the 6th season of the popular fashion designer competition show will air starting August 20, 2009. It was recently announced that NBC Universal (Bravo’s parent company) and the Weinstein Co. had agreed to a settlement, allowing Harvey Weinstein to move the highly-watched and successful reality show.

The change of networks from Bravo to Lifetime isn’t the only one: the sixth season of Project Runway is the first to be filmed at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California, instead of at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City.

NY Daily News quotes Project Runway’s Tim Gunn as saying, “I just want to express my huge relief that ‘Project Runway’ has come out of the ether and landed at Lifetime. It’s thrilling for all of us associated with the show. [...] I’ve never worked with such extraordinary, thoughtful, compassionate and just plain smart people ever.”

Lindsay Lohan is slated to be one of the guest celebrity judges this season, with past celebrity runway judges including Sarah Jessica Parker, Today show host and former New York Giants player Tiki Barber, Jennifer Lopez, and Victoria Beckham.

Also returning to Project Runway for its sixth season are recurring judges Nina Garcia, fashion editor at Marie Claire (and formerly at Elle Magazine), and famous American fashion designer Michael Kors.

Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss, and … Justin Timberlake? for Vogue Magazine May 2009

April 14, 2009

Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss, and Justin Timberlake for Vogue MagazineMarc Jacobs and Kate Moss are understandable fashion figures to be included in Vogue Magazine’s May 2009 issue, Inspiring Beauty. But Justin Timberlake? Seems the actor is still riding the William Rast wave and the attention from Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Timberlake will also be co-hosting the upcoming Costume Institute Gala next month with Jacobs serving as Honorary Chair and Moss and Wintour co-chairing.

This year’s Gala theme is The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion and “will explore the reciprocal relationship between high fashion and evolving ideals of beauty, focusing on iconic fashion models in the latter half of the 20th century and their roles in projecting, and sometimes inspiring, the fashion of their respective eras,” according to the Met’s website.

“The exhibition will examine a timeline of fashion from 1947 to 1997 through the idealized aesthetic of the fashion model,” said Harold Koda, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute . “We will look at the power of clothing, fashion photography, and the model to project the look of an era. With a mere gesture, a truly stellar model can sum up the attitude of her time – becoming not only a muse to designers or photographers, but a muse to a generation.”

Fashion Editor of Washington Post, Robin Givhan, to Move to Washington, D.C. to Cover Michelle Obama, DC Style

April 12, 2009

Fashion Editor Robin GivhanRobin Givhan, fashion and style editor for the Washington Post recently put her Upper West Side apartment on the market in anticipation of her impending move back to Washington, D.C. I understand that New York City is considered to be the fashion and style capital of the United States, but shouldn’t the fashion critic for the Washington Post have been covering fashion and style, in say, Washington, D.C. from the start? Right.

NY Mag reported that Givhan is moving “to be closer to the glamorous First Family and incorporate [the Obamas] into her beat for the Style section” — especially the fashion sense and style of Michelle Obama — and quotes the fashion critic as saying, “I could not figure out how to cover the White House from New York” when they met up with her recently at the Savannah College of Art and Design: Étoile Awards in late March.

Despite Givhan’s focus on the style of the First Family, today’s Page Six reports that the move to Washington may not have been the fashion editor’s idea:

“Robin Givhan, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion editor of the Washington Post, is moving back to DC after nine years in New York — and some folks are wondering if the move was her idea or her boss’s. ‘I’ll continue to write about fashion, but will focus most of my attention on covering the Obamas,’ Givhan told Page Six. ‘Was it my choice? Of course. Who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to chronicle history?’ But a source snarked, ‘I suspect that [new publisher] Katharine Weymouth wants her Washington Post fashion editor in Washington covering fashion in Washington.’ Givhan once applied for a job at the New York Times. “You could say that Timesmen found her salary demands excessive,’ the source said. She went to Vogue instead and then to the Washington Post, where she kicked up controversy with an essay on Hillary Clinton’s ‘unnerving’ and ‘startling’ cleavage.”

Whatever the reasons and motivation behind Givhan’s return to Washington, D.C., we suspect leaving the fashion hub that is New York City will not adversely affect her coverage of chic fashion and style trends. Especially not when Michelle Obama has become such a hot fashion topic of late.

Of the First Lady, the style columnist noted to NY Mag: “I would say that [Michelle Obama] is extraordinary, but not exceptional [...] There’s still this perception that somehow she’s alone. That she doesn’t have a group of ten girlfriends who are just like her. I’d like to explore a lot of that and just put her into a broader context and try to get at some of the issues about race and class that she brings up.”

Hopefully Givhan will incorporate this into her fashion and style column, adding more depth to some of the recent fascination (obsession?) with the fashion choices of Ms. Obama, which risks cheapening the importance of her role as First Lady. Admittedly, the style of first ladies, past and present, has always been a source of interest, but we’re hoping for more substance than the standard “Jackie O. was the embodiment of class and a fashion icon” or “Hillary Clinton’s style needs help” commentary.

New York City Topshop Launch Parties

April 3, 2009

Sir Philip Green, Lady Green, and Chloe Green at Topshop opening partyTopshop New York has officially opened, after several days of star-studded events. Sir Philip Green hosted parties at NYC restaurant Balthazar on two consecutive nights, with his wife and daughter, Lady Green and Chloe Green. The first evening featured performances by Marc Ronson and Santigold. While Kate Moss was absent from the first day of festivities, those who present at the party included Jay-Z, Jimmy Fallon, Anne Dexter Jones, Michelle Monaghan, Karolina Kurkova, Georgina Champan, Arlenis Sosa, Jessica Joffe, Simon Hammerstein, and Gossip Girl‘s Taylor Momsen.

Jimmy Fallon and Marc Ronson at Topshop launch partyWWD has Marc Ronson quoted as saying, “This is one of the weirdest gigs I’ve ever done and I’m sure it’s one of the weirdest gigs you’ve ever seen.” Among highlights at the party was Jimmy Fallon singing a rendition of Sting’s Englishman in New York, arriving directly after taping his new late night talk show; at one point he broke into the chorus of Beyoncé’s Single Ladies, probably without knowledge of Jay-Z’s presence at the party (though without wife Beyoncé).

Michelle Tranctenberg at Topshop store openingAt the store opening itself, Michelle Tranctenberg and Emma Roberts and Hanne Gaby Odiele were among the celebrity faces.

The first evening the store opened (Tuesday) was a more intimate event than the full opening on Thursday morning. Only approximately 100 people were let into the store — a decision made by Sir Philip Green in an effort to get real feedback from people. “With a small group it’s easier to talk to people and understand what they like,” he said. “It would be wrong if we had 1000 people here and didn’t know 900.”

When asked about the Topshop obsession, Emma Roberts said, “I was shooting a movie in London for three months, and I would go to Topshop once a week [...] When I came back to LA, everyone was really jealous.”

The morning of April 2nd, however, was certainly more mayhem than intimate, with shoppers lining several city blocks for hours prior to the 11 am store opening.
