Naomi Campbell is more famous for her temper tantrums than her goodwill efforts. However, in recent years, the famed fashion model has used her celebrity and connections on the fashion industry to promote her charity work. In 2004 Campbell founded Fashion for Relief, which she has used as a platform to raise money for the victims of Katrina, in 2005, and those of the British floods, in 2007.
This time around, Naomi Campbell has helped to organize a catwalk show which will take place at Lakme Fashion Week in India at the end of March. The event, dubbed “Mai Mumbai” (“I, Mumbai”), will benefit the victims of the recent Mumbai attacks which took place in November 2008.
According to Fern Mallis, senior vice president of IMG Fashion, designers were asked to donate dresses from their collections — present or past — which are “India-inspired.” Some of the designers include Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Matthew Williamson and Oscar de la Renta.
After the fashion show, the dresses will be auctioned off on eBay. The money raised from the auction will go to Citizens for Justice and Peace, an organization founded in 2002 by a group of citizens from Mumbai in response to the Gujarat genocide and whose mission is to promote communal harmony and to combat intolerance in India.
Campbell has teamed up with hotelier Vikram Chatwal to organize the event. According to Chatwal, “[the] priority is to really help the victims and create awareness…Like New York, Mumbai is always ticking and pulsating and moving forward, and what Naomi is doing with Fashion for Relief, and Fern, will really help the city.”
It’s great to see Naomi Campbell giving back to the community through her work in the fashion industry. Despite often hitting the headlines negatively for personal reasons, the model dedicates a lot of time and effort to her charitable endeavors. It’s unfortunate that her positive actions are often overshadowed by negative press and image.
