Last year was a difficult one for Peter Som, and this one doesn’t seem to be starting off on the right foot, either. Som resigned from his position as a top womenswear designer at Bill Blass in the fall. Now, after the dissolution of his relationship with Creative Design Studios, he has canceled his upcoming fall/winter 2009 runway show at New York Fashion Week.
“We have realised that our strategic interests are no longer aligned and feel that this is the best direction for our company at this time,” Som says of the partnership, which originated just under 18 months ago. “While these are challenging times for luxury brands both small and large, it’s an opportunity for us to reshuffle our deck of cards. I remain creatively inspired and am looking forward to exploring opportunities where we can grow with the right partner, or on our own.”
Other options, such as a showroom presentation and press appointments, are being explored. Given the economic downturn, the step of downsizing the Peter Som collection seems to motivated by caution — especially given that the costs of putting on a runway show run in the range of 50,000 USD.
